PALMWOODS WOOMBYE LIONS CLUB

District 201Q4, Queensland, Australia

Club Projects

Club Projects - History

The first project of the club was to raffle a cooked Ham, this raised $269.00 of which most of the proceeds provided special books for the Palmwoods Kindergarten and Woombye Preschool.

During the clubs first year the members cut bush poles and erected a fence around Kolora Park in Palmwoods. The club also started the first of their annual projects and that was the Queensland Cancer Fund's annual Door-Knock Appeal.

Another very worthy project that the club got involved in back in those early days, was the support for the "Riding for the Disabled".  We helped them with their ponies and equipment & built their clubroom and a roofed exercise area.

Several other projects the club has been involved in over the years are: The building of four Bus Shelters and five Picnic Shelters, Lions Youth of the Year, Lions Youth Exchange, hosting Russian children known as victims of Chernobyl, Nambour Blue Light Disco, the club has also provided several thousand man hours to the Lions Emergency Shelter in Nambour.

Over the years the club has also provided several cars for the Blue Nursing Service and Ambulance. We have also purchased a mobile blood pressure monitor for Sundale in Nambour.

The clubs members also built a shelter and supplied a Billard Table and equipment for a crisis room at the Palmwoods Village and Hostel.

Over the years the clubs members have cooked breakfast for Australia Day festivities and participated in the Clean Up Australia program.

The youth in our community have not been forgotten either, with assistance to the Girl Guides and Scouts along with school bursuries at both Palmwoods and Woombye, poster and essay competitions and assistance with school fund raising.

In the Lions year of 1993-1994 the club were hosts for the Lions 201Q4 District Convention

Major Club Projects - Current

Qld Garden Expo - Club members are heavily involved in the Queensland Garden Expo that is held at Nambour on the Sunshine Coast around the middle of July each year.  Members are responsible for the cleaning of all the Toilets and removal of all rubbish around the grounds for the entire show. Whilst not the most pleasant of jobs undertaken by members, this is an excellent fund raiser for the club and important in distributing proceeds to worthwhile charities and causes during the year.

Nambour Show - The Palmwoods/Woombye Lions Club run a BBQ, Food and Drink Stall under the Cricketers Stand at the Nambour Show during Nambour Show (June).  This event is always a success with plenty of hard work by members and volunteers  resulting in a tidy profit to be used for future causes.

Cittimani Hospice (Maintenance) - Members have been involved in ongoing maintenance activities including to maintain the building & surrounding grounds.

Art Show - Members are involved in helping to sell artwork for fund raising to the Laeukaemia Foundation.  This event is held at the Nambour Showgrounds after the Queen's Birthday in June of each year.

Australia Day Breakfast - Held on the 26th January of each year at Federation Park - Palmwoods, members cook up a tasty breakfast for the public.
